Arenal Volcano facts
What to know about Arenal Volcano
Is Arenal Volcano still active?
Arenal was active from 1968 until 2010 and has been resting since then. You will not see lava today, but you can walk across the lava flows it left behind.
How tall is Arenal Volcano?
About 1,650 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. It is a young stratovolcano, estimated at less than 7,500 years old, known for its almost perfect cone.
Can you hike to the top of Arenal Volcano?
No. The crater and the area around it are closed to visitors for safety, because of unstable slopes and falling rocks. Tours, including ours, use permitted trails at the foot of the volcano.
How far is Arenal Volcano from La Fortuna?
La Fortuna sits at the foot of the volcano, on its east side, and the drive to the trailheads of our hikes takes 20 to 30 minutes. Transport is included in every tour.
What happened in the 1968 eruption?
On July 29, 1968, Arenal erupted suddenly and violently. The eruption buried the villages of Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo and San Luis and killed 87 people, and it began 42 years of activity.
When is the best time to see Arenal Volcano?
The summit is often covered by clouds. Early mornings and the drier months, January to March, usually give the clearest views. From May to November, mornings tend to be clearer than afternoons.
